Why Real Ice?

Ice the Way Nature Intended.

Not every “ice pack” actually contains ice. Cold One® does.

Cold One® uses real water-based ice cells combined with 360° cold therapy and adjustable compression.

Real ice melts. And the way it melts matters.

What Makes Real Ice Different?

As frozen water absorbs heat, it warms toward its melting point of approximately 32°F (0°C). As the ice changes from solid to liquid—a process called phase change—the ice-water mixture remains near 32°F while the ice continues to melt.

Only after the ice has melted does the resulting water begin to warm more substantially.

This predictable phase change is one of the physical characteristics that distinguishes real water ice from many gel-based coolants.

Why Do Healthcare Professionals Recommend Ice?

Ice is commonly recommended to help manage pain and swelling associated with sprains, strains and other minor soft-tissue injuries.

Mayo Clinic recommends ice as part of immediate self-care for sprains and strains, generally for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Cleveland Clinic also recommends cold therapy for many recent soft-tissue injuries to help reduce pain and swelling.

Ice doesn't repair an injured ligament, muscle or tendon; it is used to help make symptoms such as pain and swelling more manageable while the tissue heals.

Designed Around 15–20 Minutes

Cold One® was designed around the commonly recommended 15–20-minute icing period.

Each Cold One® wrap contains a measured amount of water divided among segmented ice cells.

Actual melting time can vary with conditions, so always follow the product instructions and your healthcare professional's advice.

Real Ice vs. Gel-Based Cold Packs

Gel-based cold packs have a genuine advantage: flexibility. Depending on their formulation and temperature, they may remain relatively soft and pliable when cold.

Water ice behaves differently.

Water ice has a defined melting point and undergoes a predictable phase change as it melts. Gel-pack formulations vary, as do their cooling characteristics.

Controlled research has measured differences in cooling performance. In one study, ice packs produced significantly lower skin temperatures than gel packs during a 20-minute application. Other research has found crushed ice to have greater cooling efficiency than gel packs under the conditions studied.

These studies don't establish that ice is medically superior for every use, but they demonstrate that ice and gel-based coolants have different physical and cooling characteristics.

Gel offers flexibility. Water ice offers the predictable phase-change behavior of melting ice.

Cold One® deliberately chooses water ice.

Yes, Real Ice Freezes Hard

One advantage of gel packs is that many remain flexible when cold. Water ice freezes solid.

Cold One® addresses that limitation by dividing the water into multiple small, individual ice cells rather than using one large frozen mass. The segmented design allows the wrap to conform more closely around the body.

For additional flexibility, allow the frozen cells to begin thawing slightly before applying the wrap. As the ice begins to melt, the cells become increasingly pliable.

You get the phase-change properties of real water ice in a wrap designed to conform around the treatment area.

What’s Inside? Water.

There is another simple difference between Cold One® and many reusable gel cold packs: what's inside.

Cold One® ice cells contain water.

Many reusable gel packs contain water combined with polymers, thickeners, freezing-point depressants, dyes or other ingredients.

With Cold One®, the cooling material is simply water.

Why Add Compression?

Cold therapy is only part of the Cold One® design. The wrap also provides adjustable compression to help hold the ice cells securely and closely against the treatment area.

Compression helps the segmented ice cells maintain contact as the wrap conforms around the knee, ankle, elbow or other treatment area.

With Cold One®, real ice and adjustable compression work together in one reusable wrap.

Real Ice. Smart Design.

Cold One® combines the natural phase-change properties of water ice with segmented ice cells and adjustable compression in a reusable wrap.

No gel. Just real water ice—designed to conform around the treatment area and deliver cold therapy with compression.
